      Vienna Würstelstand's  says:
Ahoi, landsmen – and women, obviously! Today, we’re setting sail to visit Vienna’s first vegan sushi place, Pirata.

That's right: sushi, without fish, now officially exists in our beautiful city. For vegans, this means the days of only ordering the boring cucumber or avocado maki are finally over. All of this is thanks to two people and sheer coincidence.

“Captain” Alexander was born and raised in Brasil, worked in wholesale and experienced how fish and other meats were being processed. He later moved to Vienna, and found his one true love – and “admiral” – Julia.

A few months ago, they prepared a meal for friends with kids, and decided to go with veganised sushi for the sake of food safety. The guests went wild for it – and thus the idea of a vegan sushi place was born.

At Pirata, you can choose between maki, uramaki (rolled inside out with rice on the outside), and nigiri (one roll of rice, topped with veggies or fruit). We especially liked the ones where sweet exotic fruits like mango or papaya are paired with fresh veggies. On your first visit, the “Saladbomb” (yellow paprika, radish, corn salad, beetroot juice and sesame) or the “Honolulu” (pineapple, rocket and sesame) are a good choice with which to dive into the greatness of fishless sushi. And the best thing about Pirata is its environmentally friendly approach. Not only do they leave fish in the ocean where they belong, but most of the veggies they work with are sourced from organic farms from the region. That's also why a large part of the menu will change constantly throughout the season.

The place itself isn’t what we’d call “homey”, but that's no big deal as Pirata is about ordering to go. You can also call the team an hour before your belly starts shouting at you, and they’ll deliver the goods directly to your place. Given that you live in the 1st, 6th, 7th or 8th district, that is. And that you’re wearing pants when you open the door.
