Sapa: Vietnam is ’round the corner in Vienna

It’s stylish, it’s young, it’s mother-beeeeping delicious. (You heard me.) If you dig Vietnamese cuisine, don’t miss out on SAPA.

Don’t write about me, write about the team, the food, the ambience.

Stef is a humble man. He owns one of Vienna’s cream of the crop Vietnamese restaurants, opened up a more-than-scrumptious French bakery right next door, and always seems to be on the hop, head brimming with ideas. But, alas, I will grant him his wish and write about what makes SAPA so damn sexy … in a Vietnamese, edible kind of way.

SAPA is a stylish place, known for innovative Vietnamese food and neat DJ sounds. (You’ll encounter the latter mostly at the weekends.) And it changes its personality throughout the day – In the morning, businesspeople come for a quick breakfast. At lunchtime, the young mix with the olde. Throughout the afternoon, the audience is more female than male. And for dinner and beyond, the SAPA becomes the place to be for the young and young at heart. The music gets cranked up a bit, cocktails are served and the lights get dimmed.
But still, it doesn’t matter what time of day you arrive at this corner restaurant of the seventh – the food is worth any traveled distance. With its two-page menu, SAPA caters to every gusto of the gastro alike. Vegetarians get to choose out of almost as many meals as the folks who like to eat meat. And the team does its very best to make the vegans happy as well.

For starters, try the Pho soup with rice vermicelli and fresh vegetables. For the main course, I urge you to either have the creamy CariChay or the dish with baby corn, carrots, tofu and seaweed happily floating around in a genius caramel sauce. (Yeah, you got it, I already forgot the name of it) And of course the staple entree of Vietnamese rolls are kickass!

And if you’re done and a friendly staff member asks you whether you’d like some dessert, for pinocchio’s sake, say yes!

Go with one of the vegan tartes from tart’a tata, tasting like sweet public intercourse in the Jardin du Palais Royal. Because you’re worth it.
