5 hiking routes around Vienna you need to do in Vienna while it’s warm outside

Hiking, or simply walking, is good for the soul, right? Well, that’s what they say. Insert a couple of beer, wine or Spritzer stops along your route and you’ve got a gorgeous day.

Lucky for us, Vienna’s got a whole bunch of hiking routes crisscrossing and zigzagging (is anybody else wanting to break out into a 90ies pop song, right now) all over the city.

We’ve put together a list of the 5 hiking routes that have something special about them (and no that’s not just the wine taverns and Gashäuser we recommend you stop at along your walk).

Prater – hiking trails around Vienna

Distance: 13 km

Difficulty: this hiking trail may be long, but the terrain you’ll be covering is relatively flat

his hiking trail covers the entire length of Vienna’s big-ass park, the Prater. It will take you 3 and 4 hours to complete, during which you’ll get a glance at the many faces of this pretty park.

Starting at the subway station, Praterstern, you’ll venture all the way to the unique coffeehouse, Lusthaus, and the Wasserwiese.

This is a great trail for hiking virgins and those amongst us that are more urbanite than nature people.

You can check out the trail on this website!

Laaerberg – hiking trails around Vienna

Distance: 15km

Difficulty: this walking trail could be conquered by anybody that has legs and the will to place one foot in front of the other continuously for a 4 to 5 hour period

Located in the 10th district, this 15km hiking trail is one of the lesser-known ones.

On this trail, you’ll pass the Kurpark Oberlaa, the Laaer Wald (which is a pretty forest), and also pass the quirky and downright weird fairground, Böhmischer Prater.

Starting near the station, ‘Altes Landgut,’ you’ll be walking for 4 to 5 hours, and see landscapes where the urban development of the city mixes with farmland and forests.

Hermanns Kogel – hiking trails around Vienna

Distance: 10km

Difficulty: you know that friend who has 3 cigarettes and an Espresso for breakfast every day? Yep, they could do this hike.

Located near the Wiener Wald, this 10km hiking trail will take you around the Pfaffenberg area in the west of Vienna.

Starting off at the Sievering bus station, you’ll walk about 3-4 hours through beautiful green areas of forest-lined paths, and rolling hills. The main stop is at the Hermanns Kogel where you’ll catch a view that makes all the walking uphill worth it. Check out the detailed route here.

Good to know: there are some historic places and sights (like the Habsburgwarte) on the way, so be sure to check out the trail beforehand to mark some stops you want to see!

Bisamberg – hiking trails around Vienna

Distance: 10.5km

Difficulty: even if you end up drinking a carafe of wine in Stammersdorf, you’ll pull this off easily

Located in the 21st district, the hiking trail around the Bisamberg is quite popular.

This trail known as the Stadtwanderweg 5 will have you walking around this beautiful hilly area for 3 to 4 hours on a 10.5 km trail.

As you’ll start near Stammersdorf, we highly recommend you get a couple of glasses of wine in before you hit the trail. If you want to hold out until a bit later on the journey, you can always stop in at a Heurige (wine tavern) in Sterbersdorf.

The grape vine studded meadows of the Falkenberg boasts 25 acres of gorgeous greenery.  It works as a good picnic spot, as well, if you like to plan in plenty of food stops in with your hiking.

Kahlenberg – hiking trails around Vienna

Distance: 11km

Difficulty: wear some quality walking shoes on this one and expect some serious uphill walking

If you’re talking ‘greatest hits of hiking trails’ in Vienna, many will immediately talk up the Kahlenberg trail (Stadtwanderweg 1), hence why it’s made it into this guide.

This 11km hiking trail will lead you around the mighty prominent hill of Vienna, the Kahlenberg. Starting near Nußdorf in the 19th district, the path will lead you uphill for a fair few kilometers, however, the trail is distractingly beautiful enough to keep your mind from focusing on how your calves are burning.

You’ll especially really start to love this trail when you begin to catch the mesmerizing views over the city. There are also spots to sip at wine along the way. You can even begin in one of the picture-perfect Heurige (wine taverns) in Nussdorf if that’s how you like to start a hike.

Depending on your walking (and wine drinking) speed, it will take around 3 to 4 hours to complete the trail.

Another upside to this trail is that it has a lot of trees providing shade from the sun, so it won’t even matter if you set out at high noon (yes, we just wanted to write ‘high noon’ because it sounds cool).
