Distance: 11km
Difficulty: wear some quality walking shoes on this one and expect some serious uphill walking
If you’re talking ‘greatest hits of hiking trails’ in Vienna, many will immediately talk up the Kahlenberg trail (Stadtwanderweg 1), hence why it’s made it into this guide.
This 11km hiking trail will lead you around the mighty prominent hill of Vienna, the Kahlenberg. Starting near Nußdorf in the 19th district, the path will lead you uphill for a fair few kilometers, however, the trail is distractingly beautiful enough to keep your mind from focusing on how your calves are burning.
You’ll especially really start to love this trail when you begin to catch the mesmerizing views over the city. There are also spots to sip at wine along the way. You can even begin in one of the picture-perfect Heurige (wine taverns) in Nussdorf if that’s how you like to start a hike.
Depending on your walking (and wine drinking) speed, it will take around 3 to 4 hours to complete the trail.
Another upside to this trail is that it has a lot of trees providing shade from the sun, so it won’t even matter if you set out at high noon (yes, we just wanted to write ‘high noon’ because it sounds cool).
