The English speaking magazine. Making the most out of Vienna and life.

These dream-like photos from this Vienna-based photographer will make you feel like you can be who you want to be

WARNING: as your eyes drift over the following photography when scrolling down, you may feel a severe case of dreamlike lightness. You may also experience a sudden feeling of calm, and strength – both at the same time.

In the penetrating photos by the talented Vienna-based photographer, Michéle pauty, you’ll see Vienna (mostly it’s nature spots) as the backdrop to a dreamlike world in which everybody can be who they want to be, in which gender and race and all of those labels don’t matter. You’ll also witness a sensual beauty.

Vienna Würstelstand (VWS): Describe how you see Vienna through your eyes on your Instafeed in one sentence.

Michéle pauty (MP): I alter my reality and bend it to meet my vision. Vienna becomes a part of the dreamland I create, where gender – for one thing – is a choice and everyone can be who they want to be.

VWS: What 3 emotions you want people to feel when they look at your Instagram feed?

MP: A sense of delight, calmness, and strength.

VWS: Give us 3 of your favourite Instagram accounts that you follow?

MP: Puh! – only three?! I really like the artistic approach of @hannaburkart, the feminist work of @femsista and the photographic style of @ren.rox. Also, when you’re on the lookout for Austrian artists, I would recommend  @annamariaritsch, @leo.mayr and @_aaron_amar – just to name a few.

VWS: What do you imagine the expression on people’s faces to be like when they have one of your photos come up in their Instafeed?

MP: I’ve never thought about people’s expression when they’re going through my feed – maybe one of interested voyeurism?

VWS: How did you find the photography style that best reflected you for your Instagram feed?

MP: Via trial and error.

VWS: Where’s your favourite spot to hang out in Vienna?

MP: When it comes to nature spots, the National park and the Prater. For drinks, the second district – I’m very attached to my Grätzl, mostly Zweistern and Café Else.

VWS: What do you like taking pictures of in this city and what draws you to this subject matter?

MP: People, and I really can’t say why. I just find them to be incredibly interesting, and so many issues relating to time are handled and reflected on people’s bodies.

VWS: What gear do you use to make your photography?

MP: Mostly Canon, I own a digital and several analogue cameras. Sometimes, I also use my Hasselblad and my Polaroid, but not on a daily basis. My favourite is the analogue Canon I have with me most of the time.

VWS: How do you find people to photograph?

MP: Mostly on the street, or via Instagram. I ask people if they are interested and some are happy to join. I’m very thankful to all the people who have worked with me so far.
