5 of the best spots around Vienna where you can barbecue this summer

Have you even lived a summer if you don’t, at some point, cook some meat (or haloumi and veggies) over coals at one of Vienna’s Grillplätze (translation: barbecue spots)?

Standing around a grill in the great outdoors, cooking up some Käsekrainer while having absolute random conversations with a group of friends is one of life’s simplest pleasures and there are plenty of spots around Vienna where you can barbecue until you can’t barbecue no more.

Here’s a list of the best parks in Vienna where you’ve got the green light to grill.

Donauinsel – Coolest Grillplätze

Grilling permitted until 9pm

www.wien.gv.at

10€ fee for one of the 15 Grillplätze

Drinking water & toilet available

The island we all know and love is one of the most beloved places for a Grillfest. The Donauinsel hosts 15 “Grillplätze” that are equipped with a grill pit.

You’ve got to pay a small fee to use them (10€) and you have to be booked online beforehand. Keep in mind, you have to book well in advance – like, at the beginning of summer advance, as the grill spots are booked out quickly.

There are also two free Grillzonen on the Insel where you can do your own thing with your own portable grill – one is located at the Brigittenauerbucht in the 21st district, and one at the Steinspornbucht in the 22nd.

Any given day of a warm summer week, you’ll see smoke rising from the insel as hundreds of people flock here to get grilling. There’s a real multicultural vibe happening that we love.

Plus, you can go for a swim while waiting for the food to be ready.

Draschepark – Coolest Grillplätze

Grilling permitted from 9am to 9pm

www.wien.gv.at

Water available

In Vienna’s 23rd district, you’ll also find a Grillplatz in Draschepark (we love the name of this park, it always reminds us of Dragee Keksi).

Here, you’re allowed to grill up whatever you damn  well please on your own grill between 9am and 9pm.

The park is big, making it a spacious spot to hold your BBQ party. And if you burn your sausages or veggies, don’t worry, there is a McDonald’s nearby where you can get an emergency burger (don’t do it, just don’t).

Donaukanal/Alberner Hafen – Coolest Grillplätze

Grilling permitted from 9am to 10pm

www.wien.gv.at

Drinking water & toilet available

We bet you’ve never been to this part of the Donaukanal.

It is situated waaaay where the Alberner Hafen (yep, we also love this name) is located. The area is kind of industrial and has a really unique vibe to it, which we somehow love.

Firing up your grill that you bring along yourself is allowed between the hours of 9am and 10pm, and we recommend staying until the very end as the sunset here is extra pretty.

Krapfenwaldgasse – Coolest Grillplätze

Grilling permitted from 9am to 9pm

Drinking water & toilet available

If you fancy a BBQ in the 19th district near Vienna’s prettiest public pool (or at least the pool with the best view in town), then you should head to the Grillplatz in Krapfenwaldgasse an der Höhenstraße.

You got to bring your own grill here and you can fire it up anytime between 9am and 9pm. Then, once you’ve stuffed yourself with Käsekrainer and Kartoffelsalat, you can have a swim in that pretty public pool we were talking about.

Steinbruchwiese – Coolest Grillplätze

Grilling permitted from 9am to 10pm

www.wien.gv.at

Drinking water & toilet available

Steinbruchwiese is one idyllic looking place. Located in Vienna’s 16th district, it might be a bit out of the way, but it’s definitely worth the journey.

Here, you’ll find plenty of green grass to set yourself up on, trees and even a cute little pond.

You can heat up the portable grill you bring alongwith you from 9am to 10pm.
