These 10 pizzerias have the most deliciously creative gourmet Neapolitan pizza in Vienna

This younger sibling of Pizza Mari (see below) is owned by the same Italy-obsessed woman who knows how to recreate an authentic experience of Italy. Just like at Pizza Mari, Disco Volante is Italian, right down to the cutlery.

The mint green, white and blue overall outfit of the waiting staff looks like they’ve been inspired by a mechanic’s garage, while the shiny disco ball pizza oven is what lends the place its quirky name and concept. Everything echoes in the big hall, including families, couples, and friends enjoying the Neapolitan-style pizza that’s prepared by a couple of Italians, who always seem to be having a laugh while doing their job.

The variety is simple and so are the pizza recipes, however, in simplicity, plenty of flavours is found.

Good to know… If you like it pronto (‘fast’) the new little sister Pronto Volante has got your back dishing out pizzas faster than you can say ‘Volante!’.

La Spiga’s Neapolitan pizza in Vienna is a slice of pure happiness that transcends the boundaries of cheesy delight. It’s like a flavour fiesta in your mouth, where the crust is crispier than a potato chip but softer than a cloud, and the toppings harmonize like a quirky band of culinary musicians.

With a crust so light it defies gravity and a melty cheese blanket that rivals a warm hug from an Italian nonna, it’s a culinary masterpiece that’ll make you question if teleportation exists just so you can have it for every meal.

Keeping things simple, Sofi Vera claims to be serving up some of the best Napolitana pizza in the city. Sofi Vera spreads itself out with a huge al fresco garden at the atmospheric Yppenplatz in the 16th district, while the smell of the pizzas in the oven also lets everybody know of the Italian’s presence.

The pizzas have all the traditional toppings and sport the thick crust and thin, floppy base of a true Napolitana pizza.

In the menu, there’s a large variety of pizzas – both classic and a full page of original gourmet creations, like the ‘Deliziosa’ with toppings including bacon and nuts, and the ‘Delicata’ topped with Prosciutto, grilled zucchinis, and goat cheese.

The service counter is an eye-popper with its cover of colourful tiles, and the garden is big and beautiful.

The unpretentious and relaxed atmosphere of Pizza Mari is mirrored in the following words from its owner, Maria: “If you like the place, then come, if you don’t like it, don’t come.”

But in our not so humble opinion, there is nothing not to like about this Neapolitan-style pizza bar, but plenty to love about it. This place is honestly Italy, without the cliché kitsch. The retro-styled pizzeria is brightly lit like a petrol station, loud like an Italian in front of a football match, and the pizzas are some of the best in the city.

The laminated menu is pizza-only, with a selection with either a red or white base – from the traditional Margherita that is eaten from paper on the streets of Naples to the funky in-house creations like the Patate (a white, cheese-based pizza with rosemary, and potatoes on top) – like a lot of the Italian kitchen, simplicity is the secret recipe … and good cheese.

MOMO Pizza gourmet, or MOMO for short, is doing things their own way with pizza – from their pizza creations to the whole pizza experience. You see, at MOMO, each pizza comes in 2 sizes – one being your normal size and the other being a little smaller.

By offering up the smaller one, MOMO aims to encourage people to put a variety of their pizza creations in the middle of the table and share. The only thing they didn’t think about is that because their pizzas are so good, it makes it hard to share.

Their menu is divided into the Bianche pizzas and those with tomato sauce, and is full of delightfully delicious pizza masterpieces. Take the Del Senatore, for example – topped with goat cheese, honey (what the…?!) pecan nuts, and avocado (you have got to try it to believe it).

And these ‘What the?!’ moments are not in short supply when scanning the MOMO pizza menu. They also offer a range of Pizzotti (filled pizza pockets). The atmosphere with MOMO is also the kind of place you feel comfortable getting messy, eating a pizza with your hands.

Ah, Riva. Just the mention of your name gets us drooling. We just can’t get enough of you. We keep saying it’s an open relationship. Sure, we can see other pizzerias. But we keep coming back to you.

At Riva, the chefs are all Italian, and they are probably among some of the friendliest in Vienna. Working their magic near the entrance, it’d be awkward not to say ‘Hi’ to these guys when entering (we like to think they add a little extra topping every time we do).

You can pick and choose whichever of their four locations your heart desires to go to, but we must say that the Location at Roßauerlände really hits the spot on warm evenings.

Their pizza menu is divided into Pizze Rosse (pizzas with tomato sauce) and Pizze Bianche (pizzas without tomato sauce), and includes the classics alongside some original creations, with unexpected ingredients showing up like beetroot and walnuts in their Pizze Speciale section. They also have one of the best dessert calzones in the city.

The place is the lovechild of two of Pizzeria Riva’s former chefs, who decided to go their own way on the quest to serve Vienna the best possible version of Vera Pizza Napoletana.

They’ve released some of their secrets about how they’re doing this, eg. baking it at a temperature of 485°C in a wood-fired oven for 60–90 seconds. Francesco Calò and Donato Santoro spent the last half a year tweaking their recipe to perfection before opening the doors to their restaurant, named after the famous street for pizza in Naples, Via Toledo.

There’s only pizza on the menu, along with a few antipasto options, but the thin base and chunky crusted pizza is what you come here for. They stay true to tradition here, but also stray with a few of their own creations, like the ‘Bomba di via Toledo’, which sports a ricotta-filled crust, and is topped with bacon, a divine Provola, basil, and a high-grade olive oil. You can even order it in various pizza doughs (just be sure to ask when you order).

They’ve also introduced a dessert pizza with gold flakes sprinkled over the top… just in case you’ve ever wondered what gold tastes like.

The former Transporter Bar in the 4th district was transformed in 2018 with a new face, interior, and pizza oven. It’s become a popular spot ever since. The Neapolitan-style pizzas at Randale are coming straight out of the oven of a Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana approved gas oven (it seems they’re mighty proud of this).

They have the classics on their menu – Margherita, Capricciosa, Quattro Formaggi – while they’re also mixing things up with pizzas topped with Blunzn (blood sausage) and apple – there are a bunch of funky and original pizza creations to be tried at Randale.

The guys behind the place are the same as those who gave birth to the burger and wine bar, Weinschenke, so they’re no stranger to mixing things up.

Located in the hip hotel known as 25Hours is a restaurant with its roots in Sicily, Italy. Ribelli they’re calling it and according to their Facebook page, it’s a revolution to the typical Italian kitchen.

What they mean by this, we’re guessing, is that at Ribelli they’re offering a whole different take on what you normally find in Italian restaurants around town. We’re not sure about that, however, the pizza here is gloriously delicious.

The interior will have you staring, and the Neapolitan pizza will have you moaning.

At the quaint little market of the Stuwerviertel, the Vorgartenmarkt, there’s a pizza place bursting with the liveliness that inspires so many to love the Italians.

They’re making top class Nepolitana pizza in the little space they’ve got at the market and serving it up to the hungry guests in the al fresco garden that surrounds it.

Their menu caters to those who prefer a pizza with a red sauce base and those who love ‘Pizza Bianche’ and they’ve got all the favourites in there, including a few house creations. Plus, their calzone are on fire!
