The houses of Blutgasse in Vienna’s first district have a history that goes way back to the Middle Ages and are located in one of the oldest areas in Vienna.
Since 1862, the official name of the street is Blutgasse. There are many fascinating stories explaining the name, but the most common is the one about the Knights Templar.
Legend has it that in 1312, during the dissolution of this religious order of knights, numerous Templars were slaughtered in Blutgasse. They say their blood flowed down the alley and that’s how the street got its name.
It wouldn’t be surprising if one of them is still out there, wandering around with their sword, waiting to avenge their death.
