Escape the cold & grey weather to these 8 gorgeous Vienna bars & cafes

It’s that cold and wintery time of year when we spend more time inside than outside. So we’ve put together a list of some cafes, restaurants and bars in the city that flaunt stunning interiors.

We’ve focused on a small selection of places that make us want to linger in them for hours with their colour palettes, lighting, choice of furniture and materials, and always a high attention to detail. Here are 8 cafes, bars and restaurants where to escape to beauty on the inside (sounds like a line from a self-help book, doesn’t it?):

Crème de la Crème does more than serve up mouth-watering cakes and pastries, it also provides a French inspired, elegant, light-filled space in which to devour its sweet delights while soaking a little “joie de vivre” vibe.

Want to feel like you’re in a jungle-like garden while being cocooned indoors when it’s cold outside? The Palmenhaus has got you covered. This iconic cafe, brasserie and bar brings nature inside to you. As a converted greenhouse from the empire days, its Neo-classical shell is filled with (as the name would suggest) palm trees, ferns and other greenery. Looking up while sipping at a coffee, or while dining on its Austrian fare, you’ll be filled with that beautiful feeling only natural beauty can inspire.

The modern Japanese fusion eatery, Mochimay be small, but its hanging bar centrepiece transforms the place into something impressive to look at. Cleverly fusing functionality with beauty, the Viennese architect trio, “Kohlmayr Lutter Knapp,” have created a sleek yet warm environment in which to enjoy some of the best Japanese food in Vienna.

The season of fun in the sun may be absent, but what screams fun more than a disco ball pizza oven? Our minds… blown! Yes, your pizza at Disco Volante comes from a disco-ball-shaped oven that is positioned proudly in the centre of this popular pizzeria, reflecting the light streaming in through the generously big windows. Its glamour is balanced perfectly with the modest touches of minimal modern design setting the scene of the restaurant.

Need a bit of colour to spice up your days of 4pm sunsets and bleak-looking skies? Mercado will brighten even the grumpiest Viennese inhabitant with its playful mix of colours, textures and patterns. There’s nothing dull about this Japanese-influenced Peruvian restaurant. The lively flavour of the menu is splashed all around you as you eat.

Stepping into Motto feels like stepping into another world. Feel your winter woes melt away like snow as you’re transported to a plush, cavern-like, neo-baroque styled interior where splashes of embellishment, in the form of red-coloured lighting, ferns and toy babies stuck to the ceiling keep things interesting.

It’s all about the lighting at R&Bar. Two lighting installations quickly catch your eye upon entering this 1950’s-styled restaurant and bar. The light-bulb ampersand and the layered light-boxes that form the central hanging light make the look of this bar go pop. Even the arrangement of coloured glasses behind the bar forms its own light feature. Snazzy and sassy, this space was made for escaping the cold and whiling away a winter’s eve in style.

Paremi set off a buzz as soon as it opened. And yes, it’s buttery and delicious pastries have a lot to do with that, however, its interior also is one-of-a-kind. Right down to the cutlery and the little paper clips holding the menu pages together, a tasteful finery abounds at Paremi. You feel like you’re experiencing something special every time you’re here, and that’s got a lot to do with how beautiful the place is. It’s modern, it’s elegant and a little bit Provence.
