12 films you absolutely need to see at this year’s Viennale film festival 2022

Here are 12 films we recommend you definitely try to see at the film festival Viennale 2022 (no spoilers, we promise!):

 

R.M.N.

When & where:
FRI, October 21, 3:30pm @ Gartenbaukino (Rumanian with English subtitles)
TUE, October 25, 11pm @ Stadtkino (Rumanian with English subtitles)

Film described in a few words: In a small city in Transylvania, Romania, a group of Sri Lankan workers are hired to work in a small bread factory, resulting in xenophobic resentment amongst the locals. This drama shows a highly fragmented community and forces the audience to confront their own expectations.

 

 

Father’s Day

Film described in a few words: The toxic power of the patriarchy is shown by this story of women in today’s Rwanda. This drama is about how the paths of three women from different classes in today’s Rwanda meet, and how the patriarchy is controlling their destiny.

 

Women Talking

Film described in a few words: Eight women from an isolated religious community get together in a barn to talk about what happened in their community – women being drugged, sexually abused and subsequently blamed for the crime perpetrated against them. Instead of focusing on the crime itself, the film imagines what the consequences could look like. A fictional story based on a real crime event.

 

 

Les Amandiers

Film described in a few words: Follow the passionate life of a young acting community in Nanterre, France, during the 80s. This tragicomedy is about a young group of actors and actresses who are extremely passionate about life, deep in tumultuous love and drug usage and living in fear of AIDS, while knowing being on stage and giving their best is what counts…

 

Mato seco em chamas

MON, October 31, 8pm @ Metro (Portuguese with English subtitles)

Film described in a few words: In a huge favela in today’s Brazil, a women’s collective organizes the illegal trade of oil and petrol. A Brazilian-Portuguese film that seems like it’s set in a dystopian future, but is actually showing the present.

Film described in a few words: A trans woman is going back home after 20 years to take care of her dying mother. An Italian-American film about an excruciating journey back to the past, revolving around fear and rejection, but also redemption.

 

Tori et Lokita

Film described in a few words: This emotional film is about two young, African migrants travelling to Belgium and their hardships, struggles and joys as well.

Film described in a few words: Two teenage boys are best friends and inseparable. But the question ‘Are you a couple?’ at school splits them apart, with one of the boys cutting all ties with his best friend with no explanation given. A film about friendship, pain, intense emotions and solitude.

Film described in a few words: Romance and horror do not typically go hand in hand, but in this movie they do. Apropos hands, you might not want to lend your hand to these two! Follow Maren and Lee on their road trip across the US in the 80s as they develop a very special…and very HUNGRY love.

 

 

Brainwashed: Sex – Camera – Power

Film described in a few words: This film is an analysis of the film industry, shining a light on how the industry contributed to the objectification of women over many years and led to a reality in which women are still discriminated against and abused.

 

Heojil kyolshim

Film described in a few words: Being a detective is complicated – falling in love with the mysterious widow of a dead man in the case that you’re investigating is even more complicated. Especially if she seems to be hiding… something.

 

Eismayer

Film described in a few words: Vice lieutenant Eismayer trains young recruits who serve their time inthe Austrian military, and he falls in love with one of them. A story based on true events and real people that features ambivalence and unpredictability.
