We want you to know that we’re giving you 100% independent sneak peeks at these places with a fiercely honest flavour. Nobody paid us to eat here. On this occasion, we did know that this is a recommendable place, as one of our young writers, Iwan, has been spending his lunch breaks here for over 4 years.
But, we went there with the same approach as we do for every new or old place in Vienna that we feature in “We Came, We Ate, We Drank!”: we turn up at the place, we observe, we eat, we drink and we tell you about what we see, eat and taste. That’s it. And we promise to always give it to you straight.
So, this Greek place is in the first district, located on Wollzeile right by the U3 station Stubentor. It’s not big, and it ain’t fancy, but it’s certainly got character.

Ouzeri Bistro Ellas
What’s the menu made of: Gyros. These are pita breads filled with Tzatziki, tomatoes, round thick potato chips. Sides of grilled Melanzani, Halloumi, Greek cheese accompany some dishes. Oh, and there’s plenty of grilled meats in there.
There are lots of Vorspeisen to choose from: Olives, soft flat bread with Greek olive oil, some hummus-looking type dips made from potatoes and garlic, just to name a few.
Healthy soups like grandma would make are in the mix. Perfect if you feel like you need something to fight off a cold. And a big variety of so called Teller (translation: plates) are in the mix that will probably leave your belly bulging. Oh, and there’s grilled calamari, prepared Greek-style.
What did we manage to do while waiting for our food: 5 minutes of trying to talk about anything but work for once. Then, a 5-minute silence followed, because, TBH, we weren’t in the best mood that day.
Recommended if you like: being in Greece for vacation and eating Gyro everyday for lunch and dinner, small intimate locations, staff making random jokes like they’re your friends that go way back, having to loosen up your belt before eating, Tzatziki, eating with your hands, Greek coffee, the Greek kitchen, places that have more substance and character than fancy looks
How would we describe the place to our Oma: the interior is filled with traditional Greek wines and plenty of bottles of olive oil. The staff are friendly and love to crack a joke, or two, once in a while. We didn’t always get the jokes, but we assume they were funny.
The person sitting next to us was wearing: an elegant shirt with a tie, square glasses that might just be sneaking back into style and black leather shoes
Perfect for… a casual lunch with a few colleagues from work, or Uni. The Schanigarten might also be suitable for like a second date, but be careful, the waiter might steal your date’s attention with his charming multilingual skills.
Good to know… all ingredients are brought in directly from Greece.
