1. So young: They started construction in 1983:
The U6 became the line we know today during the second expansion phase of the Viennese public transportation system where the original city railway, which ran along the Wiener Gürtel, was transformed into the subway line, U6. So it’s like a sequel that’s better than the original. Like the Terminator 2 of subway lines.
2. So unique: The U6 trains look different from the rest
In converting the original city railway, they more or less just changed the name but did not adapt the system behind it to the more modern standards. To this day, the U6 is the only subway line which still gets its power through an overhead line. That’s why some people still call it the Stadtbahn.
3. So busy: 75 Million Passengers use the U6 per year
This makes it one of the most frequently used lines in Vienna. The shortest waiting period during rush hour is only 2.5 minutes. (That’s shorter than most bathroom breaks.) We got used to this high standard, so it’s time to re-state the obvious: this is incredibly short!
4. So long: A ride from one end to the other takes 34 minutes
If you take a ride the entire length of the U6 (and why wouldn’t you!?) you’ll be visiting 24 stations in total. While 34 minutes on one subway could seem like nothing in another city, by Viennese standards this is an epic journey! Imagine how many Vienna Würstelstand articles you could read in all that time.
5. So beautiful: It has way more segments above ground than below
The U6 gives its passengers a great look above the city, while still moving at top speeds. It’s great for tourists looking for a speedy-but-scenic route or residents who want to rekindle their love for the city. So, remember to look up from your phone and out the window once in a while and you too will feel the special magic that only our favourite brown line has to offer.
