8 films you should absolutely not miss at the This Human World Human Rights film festival in 2021

The fact that it’s being held online should not discourage you from at least catching one of the well-curated collection of films screening at the festival. With so much good stuff, it was hard to narrow it down, but here are 8 documentaries we recommend you definitely grab tickets for – they will completely change your perspective.

When: TUE, December 7, 6pm, OV with English subtitles

Film described in a few words: a trans man living in Georgia, having to make important life decisions for his family and himself, raising money to continue hormone therapy, while wanting to flee the country to feel safe again

 

Writing with Fire

When: WED, December 8, 6pm, OV with English subtitles

Film described in a few words:  a documentary about investigative journalism in a country ruled by a patriarchal system that is  being threatened by the rise of right-wing, conservative politics. A group of women break barriers and traditions by launching and leading India’s only women-run newspaper. A film about fearlessness and people fighting a system that looks to suppress them.

 

FLY SO FAR

Film described in a few words: in a country where abortion is considered a crime and perceived by the law as aggravated murder, a woman is fighting her 30-year prison sentence. She’s trying to reclaim the rights over her own body and, symbolically, millions of other females’ bodies, too. This is a documentary about women resisting men’s attempts to own their bodies

 

Amuka

When: THU, December 9, 6pm, OV with English subtitles

Film described in a few words: set in a country rich in resources, but where many of its inhabitants go hungry in a state of poverty. This offers a glimpse of what food shortages and malnutrition looks like in a world of abundance. This documentary takes a closer look at the Democratic Republic of Congo and the paradox that’s hurting millions of people

 

Dopamine

When: FRI, December 10, 6pm, OV with English subtitles

Film described in a few words: a close-up of what it’s like to see someone you love struggle with Parkinson’s disease. The filmmaker uses this crisis to reflect on her parents’ lives and the country they’re living in. This is an emotional story that touches on the topic of political resistance towards dictatorship in Argentina

 

We are Russia

When: FRI, December 10, 6pm, OV with English subtitles

Film described in a few words: the film takes a look at young activists participating in the biggest anti-Putin protests in Russia’s history. This film depicts the people showing support for the opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, who looks to shake up the country’s political system. People take to the streets to confront Putin’s authoritarian rule over the country and show what a glimmer of hope can do.

 

When: SAT, December 11, 6pm, OV with English subtitles

Film described in a few words: about a creative losing his sight in his twenties. He’s on a mission to produce images and film while being blind, and he remains relentlessly hopeful along the way. He tries to find new ways in a seemingly dark life while looking towards a hopeful and bright future ahead

 

When: SUN, December 12, 6pm, OV with English subtitles

Film described in a few words: about two young men working in a Turkish holiday resort. Their parallel stories are similar but they have different dreams. This is about a summer full of longing and hope, of observing the absurd vacation habits of Western tourists, and the boys starting to question their own aspirations
