Our favourite Vienna blogs

Because you are hungry (German)

Because you are hungry is where you should virtually land … when you’re hungry. A couple of Bavarians living in Vienna are the voice behind this blog that covers everything food in Austria, and in their kitchen. From restaurant reviews to their very own recipes, Toni & Bene lend their own personal voice to their Küchengeschichte (Kitchen stories). This is our favourite Vienna-based food blog. We really like: How they make food look so beautiful with their bold photography. We also like their section Nachschlag (second helping), full of recipes for the base ingredients we usually source from the shop like homemade pasta, yummy mango chili dip a homemade herb pesto and much more.

Recommended if you like: Daydreaming about food, cooking, being inspired to cook
PS: Their cookbook is not only a pretty face but filled with homemade recipes.

Die Frühstückerinnen (German)

The ladies at Die Frühstückerinnen have become an authority on eating out for breakfast in Vienna. With their promise, “Wir halten dem Ei den Spiegel vor” (we hold a mirror up to the egg), they are one of the first on the scene when a new breakfast is being offered in town. We really like: How the website is categorised, eg. Early & Morning, Brunch & Buffet, Sonn- & Feiertag (Sunday and Public holidays).

Recommended if you like: Spending your Saturday morning in a café somewhere eating breakfast and reading the newspaper, coffee, being a morning person, brunches, vegan breakfasts.
PS: They have been slowly extending their reach since their beginnings in 2013 and just introduced a new Berlin section.

Goodnight.at (German)

Their not just a pretty face (the website and those people behind it) over at the online lifestyle magazine Goodnight.at but also full of tips and tricks for Vienna. These days, they go beyond their original focus on where to party in the city and cover bits and pieces of culture, design and what to do in your free time. To give you a taste – examples of their content include a post on the Museums you can get into for free, their weekly round-up of event highlights, and Heurige in Wien. We’re also a fan of their ‘sturzflug’ section, where one can plan their night of drunken antics through the city just by entering a starting point with a suggested pub crawl being spat back out. Map included. We really like: The photography, web and graphic design of this site is big and beautiful. We also like their section Turteltauben in which they present the cutest singles of the city.

Recommended if you like: Partying on a Thursday night, getting to know the city, living in Vienna.

Pixi mit Milch (German)

Pixi, aka Petra Gschwendtner, ‘studies, lives and loves in Vienna.’ She also blogs with her own unique personality about fashion, photography, her travels, good food, everything handmade and random everyday stuff. She’s a determined little pixie, tending to set a lot of challenges for herself, like her most recent Burger Test in which she has set out in search of the best burger in town, or her Instagram Challenge. We like Pixi mit Milch’s name and we like her voice.

We really like: Her photo-essays of the months in photos through her eyes, eg. Mein Juni in Bildern (my June in pictures), her Nerdy and DIY section.
Recommended if you like: Blogs with a unique personality, tweeting on twitter, seeing Vienna through another person’s eyes.

When you really live in Wien (English)

We visit this site when we’re in need of a laugh. A tumblr stream of Vienna-related gifs that take the piss out of certain characteristics or insider jokes of the city. While the gifs appear less regularly than they used to, when they do, their good for a giggle. We really like: The simplicity of the focus and how most jokes are insider jokes for those that live in Vienna. We also like how the joke is in the bite-sized form of a gif.

Recommended if you like: Forgetting that it’s a Monday by finding a laugh on the net, procrastination, insider jokes, simply having a laugh, posting funny shit on Facebook.

Stadtbekannt (German)

Since its recent makeover, we like this site a whole lot more. It’s name translating as something close to ‘known around town,’ it calls itself Das Wiener Online Magazin (the Vienna Online Magazine) and has got into the guide book publishing game of late. While Stadtbekannt covers a wide range of topics about Vienna, from fashion to events, its particularly good for a sneak peak into the restaurants, cafes and bars of Vienna as it has probably the most comprehensive database of such outside of the Falter magazine. We really like: Their section Grätzltipps (neighbourhood tips).

Recommended if you like: Eating out, ideas for where to meet friends for a drink, reading your lifestyle magazines online and for free.

Wien mit Kind (German)

Are your kids running around with their pants on their heads, screaming they’re bored and in need of attention in unsubtle annoying ways? Never fear, Wienmitkind.at is here! This blog dosen’t only offer ideas on what to do with the kids around town, but also recommends kid friendly places, including bars, cafes and restaurants, around the city. It’s a great reference point for those who want to find places around the city where they know they’ll feel comfortable with the kids. It also reviews and test toys and other kid-related products which we think is pretty cool. We really love: It’s playground reviews.

Recommended if you like: children, sexual intercourse that relates in having children, entertaining the kids, knowing where other mums and dads with their children gather around the city.

Die Sicherheitsnadel (German)

This is the perfect platform for those who consume with a conscious. The influence of you buying a shirt from a shop that has their clothes produced by a 5-year-old who starves if he dosen’t sew 500 shirts in a day, or a company who’s product is produced by somebody paid above minimum wage and can go home to a well-fed family each night is often underrated. But not on the political and sustainable consumerist website, Die Sicherheitsnadel. Exposing those within the fashion and food industry who produce irresponsibly – when considering human rights and sustainably – and sell their stuff within Austria is Die Sicherheitsnadel’s talent. And they do it damn well. If your scoffing while sitting there in your H&M t-shirt, don’t feel bad – just visit the site. We’re sure you’ll be as shocked as we were of what we learned when we started following this website. We really like: Their printable Vienna shopping guide.

Recommended if you like: Consuming responsibly, the idea of your children experiencing the same quality of life that you currently do, eating with a clean conscience.

Die 78er (German)

The photography on this website is something damn special. We don’t know how they do it, but the photography here takes you behind the scenes of the city, like an U-Bahn tunnel or on the rooftops of the city. They aim to document through photography the dunkle Seite die unberührte, die abgefuckte. (the dark side, the untouched, the fucked up). We highly recommend following the 78er’s Facebook page. We really like: The unique focus of the photographs

Recommended if you like: Seeing the hidden, forgotten spots of Vienna, bold photography.

Advantgarde (German)

This is like a meeting place for the city’s various blogs and there’s one thing that attracts them to this very spot – the common ambition to create something individual and special. Under the 5 themes of fashion, food, lifestyle, beauty – and our favourite – inspiration, Advantgarde brings together a diverse blogger network. The girls behind it, Pia and Catherine, aim to bring bloggers to the attention of companies and possible advertising clients, however it acts as a good platform to check out some of the city’s best blogs. We really like: the diverse collection of blogs brought together here.

Recommended if you like: Any of the categories outlined above, somebody doing the hunt for your food, Pinterest.

Ich Kauf Nix (German)

This blog is based on exactly the concept within it’s name, Ich Kauf Nix (I buy nothing). One year without buying any clothes was the aim for one self proclaimed shopaholic…but it became so much more. It’s creator, Nunu Kaller, is a reformed shopaholic turned responsible consumer. She claims she’s a shopaholic gone cold turkey and on the site she writes about the experience and tips for other shopping junkies to follow in her footsteps. Nunu writes and offers tips on her knitting adventures and has compiled lists of fair trade and eco-friendly produced fashion labels. Her concept became so popular, it’s made it into a book. We really like: How a small idea has become such a enriching source of information for others to consume responsibly.

Recommended if you like: DIY, knitting, shopping, becoming informed on how to be a responsible consumer, pulling out of the closet that jumper your mother made for you that Christmas and trying to work out how you can make it fashionable.

Vienna Wedekind (English)

Vienna Wedekind is great if you’re the kind of girl who wakes up everyday in need of inspiration for what to wear. Even if you’re not, the website will draw you in. With it’s sleek, simplistic design, brilliant photography and the pretty face of actress and author of the blog, Carola, you can’t help but sink into it like a comfy leather sofa. The Wedekind is an Vienna-based actress. This site is her ‘visual diary and moodboard’ she claims. From the start we were curious by her original categories like ‘My Life as an actress,’ and ‘outfits.’ We really like: Her section ‘moodboard’ in which she photographs the stylish girls essentials for certain occasions, eg. ‘ a Long weekend’

Recommended if you like: Indie fashion, looking damn hot, short shorts, drinking the cocktail ‘sex on the beach’ while on the beach having sex. Acting.
