Mochi – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: While sitting surrounded under the leafy trees, pretty buildings, and some red lanterns swinging in the breeze, you’ll know why people enjoy Mochi so much (apart from the outstanding food). They really picked one of the loveliest spots in town to set up their eatery.

Keep in mind,  it’s probably a good idea to reserve your table outside beforehand as this is one popular spot.

About the food: Mochi is regarded by many as one of THE best fusion sushi spots in town.

Apart from their special rolls that come in original creations, they also offer tapas and warm meals like crispy prawns and grilled skewers.

Lucullus – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: this absolute gem of a garden can be found in Vienna’s 3rd district.

It’s a bit of everything – a little bit Mediterranean, a little bit Oriental, and a whole lotta gorgeous. Luckily, it is also as spacious as it is colourful. Lounging under the umbrellas next to palm trees is about as close as you can get to escaping into an exotic holiday without traveling with anything more than public transport.

About the food: you’ll find in the menu a small selection of breakfasts a weekly changing lunch menu, and a dinner à la carte – ranging from regional to foreign cuisine. And even if you’re not hungry, it’s very well worth the visit simply for the stunning Schanigarten alone.

About the Schanigarten: Once you step through the entrance of Santa Cruz, you’ll immediately feel those Latino vibes crawling over your skin (this may have something to do with the Latino music always being played here.

Being set in the massive Prater park, this garden is surrounded by green. The garden itself is huge and filled with colourfully painted chairs and tables, and lots of shady trees.

Besides the open-air garden, they’ve also go a terrace if you like the half-inside, half-outside kind of dining experience.

Mill – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: this place lies tucked away in a side street off of Mariahilferstraße. Most people would most likely walk by, since it looks rather unremarkable from the outside. However, once you walk through the entrance into the courtyard, you’ll know what’s all the big deal about when it comes to Mill.

Their Schanigarten boasts a rustic (and somewhat Asian-influenced) charm that’s hard to beat in terms of cosiness. With all the greenery, wooden furniture and tranquil atmosphere, you easily forget that you’re not far from one of the city’s busiest streets. Or that you’re in a city at all.

About the food: regional and seasonal specialities; from classics like Schnitzel to creamy chanterelle risotto. Plus, most of the ingredients are sourced organically and regionally by the creative people in the kitchen. Oh, and they host one of the most popular weekend brunches in town, and we’re guessing that has something to do with its garden.

About the Schanigarten: right next to the palace/ porcelain factory in the Augarten park (you know, in that building that looks like it’s coming straight out of a Wes Anderson film) is the Sperling – a gorgeous looking cafe and restaurant set in a gorgeous location.

They’ve got two al fresco gardens here – one out the front of the place and one in the charming courtyard. Vast awnings will protect you from the heat on sunny days, and while you’re sitting in the shade, you can enjoy a beautiful view over the park.

About the food: dishes rooted in Austria are on the menu here, sprinkled with international inclusions. And good news for everyone who isn’t into meat – a lot of the food they serve is actually vegetarian/vegan.

Regina Margherita – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: nestled in a little courtyard near Herrengasse in the city center, you’ll find a small piazza that will have you feeling like you’re in bella italia (that’s about as much Italian as we can manage).

Small details like the greenery, the tablecloths with lemon print on them and the Italian flags will make you feel right at home. If you’re from Italy, that is. Otherwise, you’ll just feel like you’re on vacation.

About the food: It’s all pizza, pasta and amore, here (ok, you might not be able to order the last one, it just sounds better that way).

Glacis Beisl – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: This is definetely one of the nicest gardens with food and drinks being served in it, in the city.

Sunk in a little moat-looking space next to the MQ, the Glacis Beisl garden is full of lots of trees, bushes, and flowers – this place puts the ‘Garten’ in Schanigarten.

The seating area is more than generous and the atmosphere can only be defined as ‘ahhhhhhh-worth’.

About the food: They serve up typical Hausmannskost (aka. Austrian cuisine) with a modern twist at Glacis Beisl.

Zum Schwarzen Kameel – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: With over 500 years of history, the Kameel is already an institution among Vienna’s café and restaurant scene.

There’s a lot of history that lives here, and it’s got that ‘special occassion’ reputation. Well, that is unless you’re one of those fancy folk living in the first district who use it as their Stammlokal.

Zum Schwarzen Kameel’s Schanigarten is a class act, spread out on a pedestrian boulevard in the city center, it’s a great spot for people watching…and for sipping at expensive champagne and laughing as if you’re a snobby rich kid (not judging if you are).

About the food: The menu at Zum Schwwarzen Kameel is about as Viennese as it gets – traditional dishes are reinterpreted here in a modern and creative way, and it all looks damn fancy on the plate.

Zum Finsteren Stern – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: Situated right in the city center in one of its oldest squares, you’ll be surrounded by lots of history, classy-looking buildings and cobblestones at Zum Finsteren Stern.

About the food: This is a small-portion-big-flavour-on-your-plate kind of place. You could say it’s fine dining, especially when they get to work on their dinner menu, which is inspired by the season and their creative chefs.

Heuer am Karlsplatz – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: Heuer’s big restaurant garden located right in the heart of the city makes this a prime urban location for some outdoor dining.

Occasionally, they even get DJs playing on the decks, treating you to some fine tunes while you drink and chew away at whatever you’ve got in front of you. Just what you need to make the most out of a warm summer evening. All in all, it’s the perfect embodiment of what you’d imagine a cool, modern restaurant to be.

About the food: At Heuer, you’ll be served a mix of small plates and main courses of top quality. Read up more on what’s on offer in our article about the place. A weekly changing business lunch (with both meaty and veggie options) is also on offer.

China Bar an der Wien – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: Set under big shady trees with benches wrapped around them, this garden is pretty comfy to lounge at. It also has that hip minimalistic urban look going on which all the cool kids are into right now (or so we’ve heard).

About the food: creative takes on Chinese cuisine with some fusion twists. If you like it spicy, you’ll love it at China Bar an der Wien. In addition to the already pretty extensive menu (with lots of tasty stuff in it), they also offer daily seasonal specials. Trust us, you won’t leave this place hungry.

Summerstage Terrasse – Best outdoor dining

About the Schanigarten: With a name like ‘Summerstage’ you automatically expect some serious summer vibes. Just pretend the Donaukanal (which flows past alongside this lovely terrace full of eateries) is actually the sea, let the sun shine on your face and it’s almost like you’re sitting in a beachside restaurant. Watch out for the mosquitos though after nightfall.

About the food: A colorful culinary mix of everything is on offer at the Summerstage with a diverse range of eateries serving up what they do best, from pizza to Backhendl, to Thai veggie curry and a Tandoori chicken wok.
