This is Vienna (a photo essay): My eye on Vienna

This photo essay is not trying to capture the city in bright, colourful and pretty pictures like the ones you already know from postcards. My eye is not looking at the famous and well-known sights of the city.

My eye is not even that impressed by the city’s baroque palais and gothic churches.

Instead, my eye on Vienna focuses on the unique characteristics of this very special city: My eye is looking for the city in its unknown places, in its details, in the structure and texture of the city’s surface, including it’s many imperfections. I seek the picturesque rather than the beautiful.

My eye is looking for the stories and the history, the colour and the shape of the city, the curious and the dirt.

I’m walking quite a lot through the streets of Vienna, always with my camera in my bag.

Some streets I walk almost every day, others lead me to blank spots on my personal city-map.

Either way, my eyes are always scanning my surroundings, noticing the cracks in building’s facades, the faded letters above stores and all the little imperfect details that perhaps go unnoticed by others.

I take pictures to capture something that’s maybe gone next week or next year. I aim to capture the city changing.

And these quite unspectacular pictures tell me much more about Vienna than any high-definition panorama ever could.

The end.
