Make the most out of March in Vienna with these 18 magnificent things to do

Enjoy two days of mad guitar skills from real mother-pluckers

Vienna Fingerstyle Festival 2024

Six people, ridiculously good with their fingers (and no this isn’t a porno) will be showcasing their immense plucking skills on guitars for this unique festival. Over the course of Friday and Saturday night, they will be performing live, and we can only hope that they have a camera zoomed up real close on their fingers so we can see how magic their fingers are.

What we buy and how it effects us

Curator’s Tour @ MAK ‘CRITICAL CONSUMPTION’

The Museum of Applied Arts is shining a light on everything that fashion is doing to our world with its ‘CRITICAL CONSUMPTION’ exhibition, guided by curator Lara Steinhäußer. It’s a deep dive into big issues like waste and worker rights.

Spend a weekend at this music market in a brewery

Ottakringer Vinyl & Music Festival 2024

Ye olde Ottakringer brewery will be transforming into a temple for all things music and vinyl on the first weekend of March. Pulling out all the stops, they not only have a mega line-up of some of Austria’s finest Indie and DJ artists performing in the evening, but they have also rustled up a mega market of all things music-related. Whether you are after vinyls and CDs, posters, or just browsing, or munching your way through the food trucks, you’ll find it all at this market for music-lovers.

Go look at beautiful things

The WIKAM spring fair

We don’t know about you, but we love looking at antiques and imagining where we would put this Art Deco sideboard in our imaginary summer palace. If you want to join in, check out the WIKAM spring fair at the Palais Ferstel.

Get down on your mat and do yoga in a gallery

Yoga in der Albertina

Yoga is a majestic art that calls on those who practise it to search for peace within themselves, an inner peace not many of us can achieve. But tranquil surroundings help a lot. This Saturday, retreat behind palace walls and getting your yoga breathing on within the majesty that is the Albertina gallery. Don’t forget to bring your own yoga mat (unless you want to do it on the hard floor, which we wouldn’t recommend).

A film festival dedicated to the animated cinematic art of female and/or genderqueer artists

Tricky Women/ Tricky Realities 2024

The middle of March marks International Women’s Day, and around this date, the Tricky Women Festival will be taking place at various different locations in Vienna. At the centre of this festival is the showcasing of awesome animated movies made by women and/or genderqueer artists.

The cool thing about this film festival is that besides screening movies that make you go ‘wow!’, you can also take part online. For detailed info, check the program here.

Catch a film at the Vienna Jewish Film Festival

Jewish Filmfestival Wien 2024

The Vienna Jewish Film Festival will take place in Vienna this month, and it’s got a fascinating screening program lined up this year. The festival will see a raft of movies being screened across the city, and an additional program of other kinds of events attached.

For detailed info on the festival, check the program here.

Celebrate equality

Celebrating female rights on International Women’s Day

International Women’s day is not just about celebrating the contribution women make to the human race, but it’s actually a day to remind us to keep up the fight for equality between the sexes, and women’s rights.

There will be events happening around the city in Vienna to help people come together and live by the purpose of the day: to reflect on progress made, to call for change, to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities but also to remember how far we have still to go in the fight for equality.

Strips, dots, and colour

Roy Lichtenstein: A Centennial Exhibition

ALBERTINA is celebrating Roy Lichtenstein’s 100th birthday with a major exhibition, featuring over 90 of his art pieces from 30 museums worldwide. Something you don’t want to miss if you consider yourself an art lover.

Empowering international women

‘Sprechen Sie Success?’

This event at The Social Hub is all about empowering migrant women and celebrating International Women’s Day. There will be workshops, keynotes, networking opportunities, and snacks. Plus, you’ll be able to get a professional CV picture taken and receive private coaching on motivation letters.

Become a part of the Oscars

Oscarnacht 2024 im Gartenbaukino

Get your red carpet outfit ready for a night of glamour and drama as you watch the Oscars at the iconic Gartenbaukino—with free coffee, breakfast, and an awesome supporting program included.

Grab a pint of green beer or Guinness and celebrate the Irish!

Go Irish this St Patrick’s Day

Singing, dancing without moving your arms, a green pint or two – it’s St. Paddy’s Day again! With Vienna really getting into the celebration, there’s plenty of ways to go green (literally – if ya’ drink like the Irish, you’ll be going green by 2am), be Irish and celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

Plenty of bars will be throwing parties all weekend, and there’s a parade every year. Plus, they light Vienna’s Riesenrad (ferris wheel) and Burgtheater up in green every year!

Be nifty at BeThrifty

BeThrifty Vintage Kilo Sale

The thrift store, BeThrifty, is coming to town with a vintage kilo sale again. What’s a vintage kilo sale, you ask? That just means you can grab as many clothing items as you like, and instead of paying per piece, you pay per kilo. It’s that simple.

So if you wanna go home with a lot of clothes while only spending a few pretty pennies, we suggest you stick to the lighter stuff (yep, leave the big boots for some other sucker).

The International Design Fair you've been looking for

WAMP INTERNATIONAL DESIGN MARKET

Vienna’s open-air international designer market is back!

WAMP brings a whole bunch of Eastern European and local designers together in a great atmosphere in front of Vienna’s MQ. There’s also usually a few food trucks supplying some tasty street food.

Our hearts will go on

Celine Dion Courage World Tour

If you’ve been waiting for this your whole life, this is your chance! If you’re not a fan… how dare you? In all seriousness, though, Céline Dion is coming to Vienna, and we’re sure it’s gonna be epic.

Only thing better than Christmas markets are Easter markets!

Start Easter early with a visit to the Ostermarkt Schönbrunn

The famous Schönbrunn palace and its vast and beautiful gardens are hosting more than 60 market stands offering their handmade and crafted goods and other neat Easter stuff. But if you’re like us, you’ll be more interested in the wine and food on offer that you can consume in an idyllic setting with the palace as your backdrop and the sun on your face (hopefully).

Yay! You just found your new favourite podcast!

Start listening to The Wurst Guide to Living in Austria

Alright, let’s make sure you’re starting the year off right. One power habit we suggest you pick up is to start listening to the Vienna Würstelstand’ podcast every Monday. It’s the kind of advice you’ll find in every productivity-mindfulness-be-your-best-self-while-changing-nothing book. We looked it up!

Seriously though, we really love our podcast about our love-hate relationship with Vienna and Austria. It helps people make the most out of life in this rebel of a country.

Join hosts, Jacob Moss and Gabriel Schaffler, as they explore all the questions you’ve ever had, or never thought to ask, about Austria & Vienna, with insider tips that will enrich your life and stories that will blow your mind.

Look! It's new grass!

Go for a Walk in One of Vienna’s Gorgeous Gardens

Sure, March might not be the warmest month in Vienna, but hey, spring is practically knocking at our door (feel free to sprinkle in your favorite platitudes here). So, layer up and get ready to check out the budding leaves and blooms in Schönbrunn, Belvedere, and all the other gorgeous gardens in town.
