18 things you need to do to make the most out of this October in Vienna

Give us a MMMMMM for maroni!

Snack on chestnuts at a street stand

That familiar and pleasant smell of Maroni (chestnuts) roasting on an open fire begins to invade the streets as Autumn sets in in October, as the little stands selling them open up around the city.

Even better, you can partake in an old Tyrolean tradition that saw farmers visit each other at this time of year after the grape harvest to try the first young wine of the season and east chestnuts.

So why not plan a chilly day meet up with friends where you hit up a Maroni stand, bring your own wine and do like the Tyrolean farmers do.

Go take a walk in the colours of Autumn and bring your camera!

Photograph the colours of autumn

As the trees lining the Ringstrasse of the old city begin to turn all kinds of colours (trees are such show-offs), this is the perfect time of year to jump on your bike and cycle the sweeping boulevards.

We’ve made a super cool list (well, at least we think so) of the perfect spots for autumn walks in Vienna where you’ll find heaps of brown and gold inspiration for your gram’ gallery.

We recommend you begin at Stadtpark and head towards the University, carry on to Schwedenplatz, and if you still have the energy, ride on and disappear into the Prater park which is full of those show-off trees.

The year's best photojournalism in one exhibition – powerful stuff!

World Press Photo Exhibition 2021 in Vienna

This exhibit is even in the calendars of those that hardly ever step foot in a gallery. With around 100 exhibitions around the world annually, the World Press Photo exhibition is the most popular traveling photo event in the world and will be displaying attention-grabbing photos at Westlicht gallery throughout October and the first week of November.

The poignant, moving images that are always guaranteed at this exhibition of photojournalism’s greatest shots of the year can be seen by anyone who has an interest in photography, or those that find the idea of reflecting on the last year of happenings around the world something they’d like to do.

Don’t be surprised if you leave with tears in your eyes, or full of inspiration.

Admire art at this week-long festival

Fair for Art Vienna 2021

The event, Fair for Art Vienna, sees a mix of different creative scenes and periods of art coming together in one location – and all of this will be happening for over one week in October.

The fair has taken place every autumn for over 40 years, and each and every event welcomes a new wave of artists, while also showcase the golden oldies.

Here are some name droppers to already get your artsy self tingling: Hermann Nitsch, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Gustav Klimt, Alfons Walde.

Grab your tickets for the fair via their website!

And you thought you knew porn? This festival will teach you otherwise

Porn Film Festival Vienna 2021

The title of this festival may have had you doing a double-take. Yes, this is a festival dedicated to porn. But don’t go thinking this is something just for some old perv’ who sits in front of his or her laptop in nothing but their underwear getting off to some free porn. Porn is so much more than this (too) graphic image, and this festival is here to tell you all about it.

The program is packed with erotic art exhibitions, a few parties, and, of course, screenings of pornography films, from short movies to documentaries that will educate on many of the issues surrounding the porn scene, and feature films that bring porn to an artistic level. The theme of this year is: What is shame? What is Sex? and What is Porn? This year’s festival will come with a physical edition of the exhibition and an online Mozilla hub. At the moment no registration is needed.

So for those with an open mind, this one’s for you. And for those that still think ‘porn’ or sex are dirty words, get over it, open your mind and check this unique festival out. There’s nothing wrong with pornography, well, the good and ethically made porn, anyway.

Feed your creative spirit with insights from some forward-thinking creative minds

Forward Festival Vienna 2021

This is one of those conferences that are meant to inspire you to change your life and career entirely, and get up very early in the morning for the days to follow, to, you know, simply create more.

At the Forward Festival, you’ll have the chance to feed your innovative and creative spirit with insights and ideas from some forward-thinking creative minds and successful entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, you’ll also be able to exchange ideas and network with other out-of-the-box thinkers in between keynote talks.

The focus is on creativity, design, illustration, communication, and this year the theme is: Me, We – Together We Can.

For the love of the bean

Vienna Coffee Festival 2021

This one’s for the lovers of the bean! For those that want to bathe themselves in the brown nectar of the Gods! Ok, we’re getting a bit carried away – maybe we’ve had one too many coffees already today.

Anyhow, this is the 4th time round for the Vienna Coffee Festival which will be showcasing Vienna’s budding artisan coffee scene.

Coffee battles, workshops, demonstrations of how the bean becomes a cup of bliss – this is all in the program.

A mecca for the lovers of design

Design District 1010

This weekend, the first district will turn into a design Mecca (so they’re saying), with the Hofburg at its centre.

For the course of three days, the Hofburg will serve as a showroom for local and international design brands, from the fields of art, interior design, lifestyle, and technology.

While the heart of this design festival is in the imperial palace, you can pick up a map there which will lead you on a tour of the city center along which you’ll discover a number of amazing design stores and galleries.

The big design market is back

Edelstoff – Markt für junges Design

The Edelstoff market is back! We remember our last time at the last Edelstoff Designmarkt fondly – we were greedily munching our way through the different street food stands while looking at some damn hip design, art and jewellery. Multitasking is a glorious thing.

We like that even though there’s always a big, young crowd at Edelstoff, it never gets too full, or stressful. The market will also feature the traditional hoard of food trucks to splurge at, while they also have some neat DJ tunes in the background to urge on your hedonistic urges.

The annual design market all creatives have been waiting for

Blickfang Wien

Blickfang Wien is bringing design from all fields to the MAK in October.

Many people await this event like Christmas! Especially the creatives of the city. Local and international designers are getting together to show their best of furniture, fashion and jewelry creations, plus all kinds of other stuff.

The design show is turning into a light night shopping hub on Friday evening, where you’ll be invited for shopping, drinks and music at the venue.

Feel the noise

The Big Yeet Open Air

Monster Energy is bringing monster Hip Hop beats to Vienna. At the Big Yeet festival, six international Hip Hop acts will deliver the best that Hip Hop has to offer (so they say).

Combine a great line-up with an iconic Viennese location and you’ll get a festival that you will never forget!

So don’t miss the chance to get the open air festival feeling one last time this year.

At a cinema near you: The Viennale Film Festival

Watch as many films as possible @ the film festival Viennale 2021

On the big screens of Vienna’s most charming cinemas, the Viennale film festival will be happening this month.

This international film festival is always made up of a good range of local, European and international films. This is the one time of year our eyes go slightly rectangular and our diet becomes mainly popcorn. And yes, it will be in a reduced form.

When describing the program, the Viennale has wrote: The Viennale can’t ignore the pulse of this time, it must reflect it.

This gives you a good idea of what to expect.

Check out the official program on the official website.

Unlock the truth untold

The event’s line-up includes researchers, artists, activists, and many more. You can choose between morning and afternoon chapters, network with other curious peeps, and visit an interactive exhibition.

If you’re interested in a day full of interesting talks, conversations, and networking, then this is the event for you.

Ever wonder what a pumpkin festival would be like? Well, one's happening in Vienna!

Kürbisfest am Himmel

It’s pumpkin season in Vienna and, on the last weekend of the month, you can enjoy all the pumpkin you want at the Pumpkin Festival hosted by the Oktogon Café am Himmel!

Now, we’re recommending this as we’ve heard from real Styrian people that this is one fun festival, so if it turns out to be crap, we can all throw pumpkins at these people together (which could be another idea for a festival).

Styrian producers will be selling their produce and goods, including wine and baked goods made out of those marvelous orange balls, and you can even carve up a pumpkin to take home for Halloween.

The music is typically…very Austrian at this event and plenty of that sweet, sweet Sturm is always flowing.

Make the most out of this year's spooky-season peak

Celebrate Halloween 2021!

Well, sadly, nobody can look into their crystal ball and tell us the fate of this year’s Halloween events and celebrations, so we’ll have to trust the universe on that one. In case the party gods and goddesses heard our prayers and we are able to party on Halloween this year, then we will definitely have a Halloween event guide. So keep an eye out for that!

Anyway, there’s many other things you could do this year, other than your usual witchy midnight ritual to hex your ex with a lifetime of misfortune. If you want to spend the day outside, you could go on a spooky walk through the Zentralfriedhof, or check out the catacombs under good ole’ Stephansdom.

All you homebodies out there can prepare a spooky movie night with lots of haunted snacks like finger-hotdogs and blood punch and chill the night away with a covid-friendly amount of friends.

Or, you can take it upon yourself to prepare a murder mystery party and have you and your friends play the protagonists in a, you guessed it, cold-blooded murder story.
