24 things you need to do to make the most out of this October in Vienna

Come on down to the comic con and nerd the f*** out

Vienna Comic Con 2022

The event of the year for comic fans is here this month, during which the Messe will be filled with more people in costumes than at a Fasching party. But Comic Con is more than just fancy and outlandish outfits. There will be a floor packed with exhibitions, photo/autograph opportunities and panel events covering all aspects of gaming, Manga, film, Anime, comics, and much more. Even if you haven’t had a whole year to prepare your outfit, it is amazing what you can do with some cardboard and a bit of imagination (spray paint helps).

Admire art at this week-long festival

Fair for Art Vienna 2022

The event, Fair for Art Vienna, sees a mix of different creative scenes and periods of art coming together in one location – and all of this will be happening for over one week in October.

The fair has taken place every autumn for over 40 years, and each and every event welcomes a new wave of artists, while also showcase the golden oldies.

A mecca for the lovers of design

Design District 1010

The first district will turn into a design Mecca (so they’re saying), with the Hofburg at its centre.

For the course of three days, the Hofburg will serve as a showroom for local and international design brands, from the fields of art, interior design, lifestyle, and technology.

While the heart of this design festival is in the imperial palace, you can pick up a map there which will lead you on a tour of the city center along which you’ll discover a number of amazing design stores and galleries.

At a cinema near you: The Viennale Film Festival

Watch as many films as possible @ the film festival Viennale 2022

On the big screens of Vienna’s most charming cinemas, the Viennale film festival will be happening this month, for the 60th time!

This international film festival is always made up of a good range of local, European and international films. This is the one time of year our eyes go slightly rectangular and our diet becomes mainly popcorn. And yes, it will be in a reduced form.

When describing the program, the Viennale has wrote: The Viennale can’t ignore the pulse of this time, it must reflect it.

This gives you a good idea of what to expect.

Give us a MMMMMM for maroni!

Snack on chestnuts at a street stand

That familiar and pleasant smell of Maroni (chestnuts) roasting on an open fire begins to invade the streets as Autumn sets in in October, as the little stands selling them open up around the city.

Even better, you can partake in an old Tyrolean tradition that saw farmers visit each other at this time of year after the grape harvest to try the first young wine of the season and east chestnuts.

So why not plan a chilly day meet up with friends where you hit up a Maroni stand, bring your own wine and do like the Tyrolean farmers do.

The year's best photojournalism in one exhibition – powerful stuff!

World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 in Vienna

This exhibit is even in the calendars of those that hardly ever step foot in a gallery. With around 100 exhibitions around the world annually, the World Press Photo exhibition is the most popular traveling photo event in the world and will be displaying attention-grabbing photos at Westlicht gallery throughout September, October and the first week of November.

The poignant, moving images that are always guaranteed at this exhibition of photojournalism’s greatest shots of the year can be seen by anyone who has an interest in photography, or those that find the idea of reflecting on the last year of happenings around the world something they’d like to do.

Don’t be surprised if you leave with tears in your eyes, or full of inspiration.

Go take a walk in the colours of Autumn and bring your camera!

Photograph the colours of autumn

As the trees lining the Ringstrasse of the old city begin to turn all kinds of colours (trees are such show-offs), this is the perfect time of year to jump on your bike and cycle the sweeping boulevards.

We’ve made a super cool list (well, at least we think so) of the perfect spots for autumn walks in Vienna where you’ll find heaps of brown and gold inspiration for your gram’ gallery.

We recommend you begin at Stadtpark and head towards the University, carry on to Schwedenplatz, and if you still have the energy, ride on and disappear into the Prater park which is full of those show-off trees.

Get your cosplays ready

YuniCon 2022

Those who know, know. Another convention is ahead! The YuniCon! For those who are not giant nerds like we are, the YuniCon is a convention filled with Anime, Manga and Co. There’ll be a full programme of workshops, live acts, contests (we love a contest), and merchandise. Everything your little geek heart can dream of, basically. So whip out your cosplay and come along!

Feed your creative spirit with insights from some forward-thinking creative minds

Forward Festival Vienna 2022

This is one of those conferences that are meant to inspire you to change your life and career entirely, and get up very early in the morning for the days to follow, to, you know, simply create more.

At the Forward Festival, you’ll have the chance to feed your innovative and creative spirit with insights and ideas from some forward-thinking creative minds and successful entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, you’ll also be able to exchange ideas and network with other out-of-the-box thinkers in between keynote talks.

Find the complete program and other details about the festival on their website.

The big design market is back

Edelstoff Weihnachtsmarkt für junges Design

The Edelstoff market is back! We remember our time at the last Edelstoff Designmarkt fondly – we were greedily munching our way through the different street food stands while looking at some damn hip design, art and jewellery. Multitasking is a glorious thing.

We like that even though there’s always a big, young crowd at Edelstoff, it never gets too full, or stressful. The market will also feature the traditional hoard of food trucks to splurge at, while they also have some neat DJ tunes in the background to serve your hedonistic urges.

A beer pong championship in the brewery

Beer Pong Vienna 2022

Beer Pong is more than just a game. And supposedly, or at least in theory anyway, it is the only game in which the losers also somehow win. Whether you take part in the tournament happening at the Ottakringer brewery (where there are prizes galore), just play with some friends, or are simply there to spectate and enjoy the party, this should be one entertaining evening.

The annual design market all creatives have been waiting for

Blickfang Wien

Blickfang Wien is bringing design from all fields to the MAK in October.

Many people await this event like Christmas! Especially the creatives of the city. Local and international designers are getting together to show their best of furniture, fashion and jewelry creations, plus all kinds of other stuff.

The design show is turning into a light night shopping hub on Friday evening, where you’ll be invited for shopping, drinks and music at the venue.

A week dedicated to Sake

Sake Week Vienna 2022

Vienna will see its Sake festival taking place again starting this Saturday. Various events will take place throughout the city during this week that are dedicated to Japan’s finest rice wines. Take part in cheese & sake tastings, sake & sense blind tastings and masterclasses with sake sommeliers (yup, that’s a thing) and much more!

Wiener wieners and gender roles

Ausstellung: Das Phallus-Syndrom

In the mood to go to an exhibition and look at some beautiful phallus? Yeah? At ‘masc foundation‘ two artists review their mother’s generation’s view on gender roles – with humour but also viewing in-depth philosophical thoughts on the gender roles from the 1970s up to today. Definitely go to the opening event on Saturday, the first of October (6 pm-11 pm). Or, if you can’t make it, at least go to the closing event exactly one week later, starting at 5 pm! If that’s just not possible for you, you can also visit the exhibition Wednesday-Saturday from 5 pm until 8 pm. Yay.

By the way, this exhibition is part of the permanent event ‘grundstein‘ and MUSAO 2022 (Museum astray Ottakring). So, if you’ve already had enough of looking at wieners, you can also check out other events.

A night at the museums

Museum hopping @ ORF Lange Nacht der Museen 2022

Once a year, the museums are the cool kids in town and leave clubs and dance floors empty as they make crowds of people choose art and discovery over getting so smashed you pass out in the closest park on your way home. As part of the long night of the museum, museums and galleries will open their doors (including many rarely open places) from 6pm to 1am for all those interested in culture. Presentations, special exhibitions and other events will also be happening all over town throughout the night as part of the program.

One ticket will ensure you the entrance into a variety of museums, so plan ahead and map out your choices so you’re prepared. The main museums will obviously be the busiest ones, where queues are to be expected. So, why not use the occasion to check out the smaller, more underground and unexpected amongst Vienna’s museums? Such as a hat museum, or one dedicated to funerals? Get inspired by our guide of the lesser known, weird and wonderful museums in Vienna.

Girlpower united!

Female Future Festival Vienna

This October the Female Festival will be happening. It’s focus is on the female of our species, particularly women at work and how the can get ahead in the future. This festival is for CEOs, women who want to climb the career ladder, and anybody else who is looking to create and achieve more. It’s worth checking out.

Fill your belly!

Popchop Food Festival

It’s getting cold. Heating costs a limb. So you might want to put on a few extra pounds before you freeze your toes off. And lucky you! We have just the event for you…A food festival! Yaaaaay! (Or rather, ‘yummmmm.’) This festival invites you to experience food and food culture on a new level. Expand your horizon while tasting foods from different cultures as well as modern cuisines.

The perfect place to be on a Sunday

Autumn Design Markt

Does going somewhere where there are a lot of creative people, a good atmosphere and really nice stuff to purchase sound like the perfect Sunday thing for you? Well, then check out the ‘Autumn Design Markt’ in the 6th district. There will be cool handmade jewellery, vintage and designer clothing, exquisite handmade lingerie, illustrations, ceramics and more. Everyone is welcome!

Feminist voices coming together

Tashweesh Festival

You wanna talk and hear about gender, queer and trans utopias, public space, activist strategies and feminist revolutions? Then do not, under any circumstances, miss the incredible ‘Tashweesh.’ It’s an international art festival that brings together feminist movements from Europe, Southwest Asia and North Africa. And they’re also making a stop in Vienna from October 7th to 15th. Lucky us!!!

The programme is really broad – there’ll be discussions, reading groups, and screenings. And if that’s not enough for you check out one of the performances, concerts or club nights.

Put off your inner mask and let yourself feeeel

Beginning

Vienna’s English Theatre is presenting a play that fits perfectly with the colder and darker days ahead of us: Beginning, a piece by David Eldridge. It revolves around loneliness, broken dreams, and warm, fragile human connections. But don’t worry, you’ll find more than just sadness in there – there’s also lots of humour and relatability!

The Gürtel bars combine to deliver one massive party night!

Gürtel Connection

The whole nightlife hotspot strip, the Gürtel, will come alive at the end of this month for one night only for a big festival. And the partying is all in the name of charity! Many of the night spots along the shady infamous Gürtel will join forces to deliver over 50 live acts and DJ performances across 13 different venues. And this year, the majority of the proceeds will go to Die Gruft and the organisation Selbstlaut.

This will be one hell of a night that will continue on into the early hours of the following morning, The only problem will be deciding where to start. Check out the programme on their event page.

Make the most out of this year's spooky-season peak

Celebrate Halloween 2022!

IT IS SPOOKY SEASON PEOPLE. Sorry, did we come off too strong? Well we are VERY excited about Halloween this year as you can imagine, and of course we’ll put together a Halloween Guide for you, so you just wait a bit longer!

If you’re more the lowkey celebrator, there’s many other things you could do this year, other than your usual witchy midnight ritual to hex your ex with a lifetime of misfortune. If you want to spend the day outside, you could go on a spooky walk through the Zentralfriedhof, or check out the catacombs under good ole’ Stephansdom.

All you homebodies out there can prepare a spooky movie night with lots of haunted snacks like finger-hotdogs and blood punch and chill the night away with a covid-friendly amount of friends.

Or, you can take it upon yourself to prepare a murder mystery party and have you and your friends play the protagonists in a, you guessed it, cold-blooded murder story.

Be sure to get your daily dose of culture!

All the best culture and art events happening in Vienna right NOW

With so many culture events taking place – be it exhibitions in museums, powerful plays on theatre stages, art shows that scratch that inspiration itch – getting your daily dose of culture in Vienna is easy-peasy. That is, if you have our awesome art and culture guide, which tells you all about the best events happening in Vienna right NOW (or soon-ish). If you think we’re missing any important ongoing culture events, drop us a message on Facebook, Instagram, or the good old, oldschool way, via mail.

Laugh until you snort

Kabarett Christoph Fritz – Zärtlichkeit

If you want to let out a hearty belly laugh (possibly followed up by a snort) then make sure not to miss this comedy show by Christoph Fritz. He’ll talk about getting touchy (whether you like it or not). Intimacy, unwanted intimacy and love are his main topics. Fun! No, for real. It will be fun. For sure.
