15 things you NEED to do to dive (finally) into summer and make the most out of June 2021 in Vienna

Catch a short film at this shorts festival

Vienna Shorts 2021

The Vienna Shorts is an annual international film festival where you can catch short films galore at various cinemas around town. This year the festival will take place online and in selected cinemas. Be sure to check out the film programme as there’s plenty of quality stuff in there. Many of the films have actually been nominated for various film awards. Just sayin’.

Enjoy life by the waterside

Spend some time by the Donaukanal

It doesn’t take much to spend an amazing evening at the Donaukanal. And we suggest you spend a bit of time down there by the waterside during June. Make sure to follow our list of the DOs and DON’Ts so you truly enjoy the Donaukanal to the max during the summer.

For love, diversity and equal rights

Celebrate love at Vienna Pride

Thousands of people join this wonderful and colourful event every year to express their solidarity with the LGBTIQ communities in Austria and around the world.

The highlight is of course the famous rainbow parade. And while the celebration atmosphere makes the rainbow parade look like a huge street party, everyone is reminded that this is also a political demonstration demanding a non-discriminating society in Austria and elsewhere. So, strong messages of love, respect and solidarity are encouraged on either banners, t-shirts, your dance moves on the street, or in what you simply shout out loud!

Fan of the word? Don't miss this huge online poetry festival

Berlin’s 22nd Poetry Festival – Da liegt Europa

While festivals are being cancelled all over the place in Corona times, some of them are finding ways for the show to go on…online. Berlin’s Poetry festival is doing just that. They’re calling this year’s 7-day festival, Planet P, and it will be jam-packed with poetry that will move you, inspire you and lead you into deep thoughts – like all good poetry should.

They’ve got 150 writers in the program from around 40 countries, with the focus this year being on the poetry of Europe. All of these talented wordsmiths will participate in over 100 talks, readings, poetry slams, interviews and workshops – all streamed online, so you can watch them from wherever you are.

Poets will obviously be reading in German and in English, so it’s an international affair. If you’re a fan of poetry, do check out the website for all the info you need. If you’re not a fan of poetry, or just don’t get it, we’d suggest you still tune in – this festival is all about bringing poetry to everybody.

Spend your days lounging around and throwing a frisbee in the green

Go picnic in a park all day long!

It’s time to take the dinner table to the park! Grab yourself a picnic basket (or some 1 of the 1000s of tote bags you’ve got hanging around), lay out a blanket, lie back and spot the shapes in the clouds – ’that one’s a donkey, that one’s a mother relentlessly pushing her child towards academic achievement.’

Vienna has a range of pleasant parks where to watch a sunset, have a picnic, a drink, or fly a kite. Check out our list of our 8 favourite parks to picnic in Vienna.

Enjoy the sun and a Spritzer in 100s of Schanigärten

Sit & spend time every day in a different Schanigarten

The time everyone has been waiting for has arrived! All the bars, cafes and restaurants of the city can open up again. Halleluja! You know what that means – you and your butt should be sitting in a different Schanigärten every damn day, and be trying out all those restaurants you always wanted to try out before the shutdown hit!

Check out this guide on Schanigärten in Vienna if you’re looking for places where you could be bingeing on Spritzers in the sun.

Warm sand + cool drinks = perfect summer day

Sink your toes into the sand at a beach bar

Since restaurants and bars started opening, so did some of the city’s beloved beach bars!

Longer days and warmer temperatures have us yearning for some fun and sun in the sand. Vienna might not be blessed with natural beaches, but don’t let that stop you from slipping into your swimmers and sinking your toes into the sand at these a beach bar.

If all goes according to plan weather-wise in June, we recommend you spend a few of your evenings seeing the sun set in one of the city’s bars with sand. We’ve made a list of our favourites for you that you can check out here.

Eat, swim, tan, repeat

Cool off in an outdoor pool

Summer days can get pretty hot in Vienna, so what better way to cool off from the scorching heat than jumping into the refreshing waters of one of the city’s many outdoor pools. Whether you’re a serious swimmer, or just one of those pool loungers standing in the serious swimmer’s way, it’s time to get your bathers out of the closet.

Most of the public pools also have spacious green areas, which are perfect for lying around and getting your tan on. Some of them even come with awesome water slides. And believe us when we tell you: you’re never too old for those things!

Not sure which one to visit? Then check out this guide we made.

Watch some films on the big screen again

Catch a film at an indie cinema!

A select few indie cinemas are reopening and so you can get a dose of the going to the movie experience if you’re one of us that have been missing it. The cinemas we know for sure that are open include: Filmhaus, Filmcasino, Schikaneder, and Top Kino. Also two of the Cineplexx cinemas: Actor’s Studio and Urania Kino.

Check out this new open air cinema in Vienna

Frühlingskino Open Air im Augarten 2021

Vienna’s got a brand new open air cinema this year – the “Frühlingskino”. Not only is the atmosphere unique amongst the trees of the park known as the Augarten (which is also home to the Kino wie noch nie open air cinema throughout summer), yet also the film programme is special.

Austrian film productions from 2020 and 2021 will be screened, with films like, Die Dohnal, Ein bisschen bleiben wir noch, and Quo Vadis, Aida? on the list. Be sure to check out the film programme!

Let out your big belly laughs at these culture and cabaret events happening in a park

Theater im Park

When a former royal garden opens up for the entertainment of us peasants – like the Garden of the Palais Schwarzenberg is doing for the summer-long Theater im Park, – it might be time to dust off that suit and dress you got in the back of your closet. A good dose of culture and cabaret is going to be served up to you right in the park under the stars. It’s very much tailored to be Corona-safe, but probably not from mosquitos. Check out their programme!

A summer festival with a cool concept

Wir sind Wien Festival der Bezirke 2021

This festival, celebrating Vienna’s culture scene, will be taking place all over town.

Starting on June 1st, there are gonna be events in the first district, on June 2nd in the second, and so on (you get the idea) – it will be working its way outward.

And the events are as diverse as the locations. Various live concerts, photography exhibitions, readings, guided tours are in the program – you name it. We’re sure you’ll find something that interests you while browsing through the extensive festival programme.

Stay fresh and keep it fesch

Fesch’markt Wien #22

On the first weekend of June, the Ottakringer Brauerei will turn into that huge and hip market that brings a bunch of talented and up-and-coming independent designers together in the one place.

Around 250 stands – filled to the brim with art, fashion, jewellery and other cool kinds of unique design pieces – will make your inner-hipster scream with joy. And did we already mention the abundance of tasty street food there’ll be on offer? ‘Cause, ya know, shopping makes everybody hungry.

A new art fair is coming to town

SPARK Art Fair Vienna 2021

The new SPARK art fair will be organising for various galleries – both national and international, established and emerging – to host around about 85 solo exhibitions.

Whether you’re an artist yourself, an avid collector, or simply an art enthusiast, this promises to be an interesting fair of art and a fine addition to Vienna’s culture scene. For a full list of the galleries exhibiting and further details, head over to the website.
