15 things you NEED to do to dive into summer & make the most out of June 2022 in Vienna

Enjoy life by the waterside

Spend some time by the Donaukanal

It doesn’t take much to spend an amazing evening at the Donaukanal. And we suggest you spend a bit of time down there by the waterside during August. Make sure to follow our list of the DOs and DON’Ts so you truly enjoy the Donaukanal to the max during the summer and check out our ultimate guide to what’s happening on the Donaukanal in 2022!

For love, diversity and equal rights

Celebrate love at Vienna Pride

Thousands of people join this wonderful and colourful event every year to express their solidarity with the LGBTIQ communities in Austria and around the world.

The highlight is of course the famous rainbow parade. And while the celebration atmosphere makes the rainbow parade look like a huge street party, everyone is reminded that this is also a political demonstration demanding a non-discriminating society in Austria and elsewhere. So, strong messages of love, respect and solidarity are encouraged on either banners, t-shirts, your dance moves on the street, or in what you simply shout out loud!

A summer festival with a cool concept

Wir sind Wien Festival der Bezirke 2022

This festival, celebrating Vienna’s culture scene, will be taking place all over town.

Starting on June 1st, there are gonna be events in the first district, on June 2nd in the second, and so on (you get the idea) – it will be working its way outward.

And the events are as diverse as the locations. Various live concerts, photography exhibitions, readings, guided tours are in the program – you name it. We’re sure you’ll find something that interests you while browsing through the extensive festival programme.

Eat, swim, tan, repeat

Cool off in an outdoor pool

Summer days can get pretty hot in Vienna, so what better way to cool off from the scorching heat than jumping into the refreshing waters of one of the city’s many outdoor pools. Whether you’re a serious swimmer, or just one of those pool loungers standing in the serious swimmer’s way, it’s time to get your bathers out of the closet.

Most of the public pools also have spacious green areas, which are perfect for lying around and getting your tan on. Some of them even come with awesome water slides. And believe us when we tell you: you’re never too old for those things!

Not sure which one to visit? Then check out this guide we made.

Spend your days lounging around and throwing a frisbee in the green

Go picnic in a park all day long!

It’s time to take the dinner table to the park! Grab yourself a picnic basket (or one of the 1000s of tote bags you’ve got hanging around), lay out a blanket, lie back and spot the shapes in the clouds – ’that one’s a donkey, that one’s a mother relentlessly pushing her child towards academic achievement.’

Vienna has a range of pleasant parks where to watch a sunset, have a picnic, a drink, or fly a kite. Check out our list of our 8 favourite parks to picnic in Vienna.

Enjoy the sun and a Spritzer in 100s of Schanigärten

Sit & spend time every day in a different Schanigarten

It’s summertime! Halleluja! You know what that means – you and your butt should be sitting in a different Schanigärten every damn day, and be trying out all those restaurants you always wanted to go to before its too cold to sit outside again.

Check out this guide on Schanigärten in Vienna if you’re looking for places where you could be bingeing on Spritzers in the sun.

Stay fresh and keep it fesch

Fesch’markt Wien #24

In June, the Ottakringer Brauerei will turn into that huge and hip market that brings a bunch of talented and up-and-coming independent designers together in one place, again – the Feschmarkt.

Around 250 stands, filled to the brim with art, fashion, jewelry, and other cool kinds of unique design pieces, will make your inner-hipster scream with joy.

And did we already mention the abundance of tasty street food there’ll be on offer? ‘Cause, ya know, shopping makes everybody hungry.

Eat until you drop at this fair for gourmets

Genusswelten 2022 – Spezialitäten im Sommer

Fitting to the season, this food fair has its culinary focus on summery specialties. From sizzling hot stuff on the grill to refreshing cool stuff in the form of ice cream, frozen yogurts, and drinks – here you can watch the pros do their thing while getting inspiration for what to serve at your next summer party.

And obviously, you could stuff your face with all the yummy stuff being served up. We recommend you to wear your stretchy pants for this event. Oh, and it’s happening in one cool location.

Warm sand + cool drinks = perfect summer day

Sink your toes into the sand at a beach bar

Longer days and warmer temperatures have us yearning for some fun and sun in the sand. Vienna might not be blessed with natural beaches, but don’t let that stop you from slipping into your swimmers and sinking your toes into the sand.

If all goes according to plan weather-wise in June, we recommend you spend a few of your evenings seeing the sun set in one of the city’s bars with sand. We’ve made a list of our favourites for you that you can check out here.

Watch fantastic films on the big screen

Catch a film at an indie cinema

If you wann escape the sun and heat for a while (no shame in that, we get it), why not swing by one of the Vienna’s fantastic indie cinemas. Not only are they air-conditioned, you’ll also get to see amzing movie gems. Just check out the likes of Gartenbaukino, Filmhaus, Filmcasino, Schikaneder or Top Kino to see what’s playing currently.

Enjoy beautiful music in the royal gardens

Sommernachtskonzert 2022

At Schönbrunn, people will be kicking off summer in a classical style in front of a fancy-schmancy castle and be listening to some fancy-schmancy classical music. Yep, we’re referring to the famous annual, Sommernachtskonzert, performed by the badass performers and breakdancers (this last bit may not be true) of The Vienna Philharmonics, with the dazzling palace in the background. This unique experience is FREE and inspires WOWs every time.

Rock galore at the stadium

Hella Mega Tour

Three of the arguably biggest rockbands of our time – Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer – have joined their guitar-heavy forces to serve you with a literally stadium-sized show. It may not be Woodstock, but you might still wanna tell your grandkids about this one.

Let out your big belly laughs at these culture and cabaret events happening in a park

Theater im Park

When a former royal garden opens up for the entertainment of us peasants, like the garden of the Palais Schwarzenberg is doing for the summer-long Theater im Park, it might be time to dust off that suit and dress you got in the back of your closet. Ok, you won’t need to dress up for this as it’s a nice casual affair. A good dose of culture, theater and cabaret is going to be served up to you right in the park under the stars if you buy a ticket for one of the shows going on all summer. Check out their programme!

Join the crowds at Europe’s largest free festival on the island

Donauinselfest 2022

Hundreds of hours of musical performances will make up the biggest free music festival in Europe. They’ve secured various national as well as international artists so it should be a good one.

Prepare yourself for days of eating grease-oozing garlic langos, drinking beer you illegally purchased from your dancing neighbour and endlessly queuing up to pee. You can even bring your Oma if you like as there’s plenty on the lineup for both old and young. Ahhh, this festival – you either love it or hate it. Anways, it’s happening this weekend. Don’t forget to check the detailed programme.

An X factor for K-Pop fanatics

K-Pop World Festival Austria Finals 2022

We must confess that until writing this event tip, we didn’t realize how big of a thing k-pop is here in Austria. But it is, and we are damn glad it is. On the 25th of June, you can catch the Austrian World Cup of K-Pop (Korean Pop) final for what is essentially an X-Factor talent show.

With one small quirk, it is a genre-specific talent search for the finest K-Pop artist/band. Un-ruddy-believable, right? And the winner will get to take part in the World K-Pop finals in Korea.

Take over the city with your bike or rollerblades

Friday Nightskating 2022

Friday Nightskating is back for the season! Ring-a-ding-ding (that’s your bike bell resounding amongst hundreds of others on the night skate). Ever been surprised by a horde of skaters and cyclists passing you by in the middle of the night on Vienna streets? Rest assured, this wasn’t your mind playing tricks on you, but rather it was the crowd doing the Friday Nightskate. This is a recurring summer event in Vienna that is a whole lot of fun! Rollerblade and bicycle enthusiasts meet every Friday at 9pm on Heldenplatz to follow their passion in cruising through the streets of Vienna (that’s right, they even shut down streets for this event!)

Plus: All the routes are different every time, so you might discover some places you’ve never been to before in Vienna.
